The original W1 satellite was damaged during construction by a malfuncioning fire extinguishing system.
In May 1998 a fire broke up in the factory where the satellite was being built. The cause for the fire was that one of the antennas, being tested at maximum power, was directly pointing towards a wall covered in carbon foam. Owing to the high RF power released (60 Watts) the foam quickly overheated and started burning. The satellite was covered with water (not fire!) and later declared a total loss, but was later reconstructed and completed as W5. The replacement for the W1, which was to be named W1R was reconfigured before launch and finally launched as Eurobird 1.

In 2002, Eutelsat bought the satellite for a launch just a few months later and renamed it Eutelsat W-5.
