Description:

• The International Docking Adapter (IDA) is a spacecraft docking system adapter being developed to convert APAS-95 to the NASA Docking System (NDS)/ International Docking System Standard (IDSS). An IDA will be placed on each of the International Space Station's (ISS) two open Pressurized Mating Adapters (PMA), both of which will be located on Node-2 (Harmony module).
• These adaptors will be carried in the trunk of two Dragon cargo capsules to the ISS, where they will be mated to the APAS-95 docking adaptors of the PMAs. The other side features the NASA Docking System (NDS), which will be used by the new manned spacecrafts. NDS uses a new design of docking system by Boeing, called SIMAC (Soft Impact Mating Attenuation Concept), which is a non-proprietary design essentially based on APAS-95 but featuring a narrower soft-capture ring.
• Boeing is the primary contractor for the IDAs and the adapters were assembled at their Houston Product Support Center. Parts from subcontractors came from roughly 25 American states and the primary structure is from Russian company RSC Energia. IDA weighs about 520 kg (1,150 lb) and has a length of about 76 cm (30 in) from base to top.
• IDA-1 is planned to be launched on SpX CRS-7 and attached to Node-2's forward PMA. IDA-2 is planned to be launched on SpX CRS-9 and attached to Node-2's zenith PMA. When each IDA arrives, Dextre would remove it from Dragon's trunk and move it to about 30 cm (1 ft) from the front of the PMA. Astronauts during an Extravehicular activity would then attach tethers to the IDA and manually connect it to the PMA.
