Developed by Delta-Utec Space Research and Consultancy. YES is a sub-satellite
to study the dynamics of tethered satellites. It was designed, assembled and
integrated in record time by young graduates and students at ESTEC. A GPS
receiver is installed to evaluate the use of GPS for navigation, especially
above the GPS satellite constellation. YES also contains technology validation
experiments which will measure radiation, the solar angle and acceleration in
autonomous mode, after separation from MAQSAT-H. It also carried a commercial
technology PC and camera experiment.
Originally it should have been tether-attached (double strand tether, 35
km).
There is another 12 kg satellite, TORI (Tethered ORbit Insertable) that is
attached to the other side of the tether and would also be released form
MAQSAT-H, but due to the cancellation is still attached. TORI carries the first
application of an 1.5 m absorptive tether in space as a passively extensible
rod and for shock absorption. TORI carries some autonomous electronics that are
part of the tether experiment.
