• IRNSS 1C is part of IRNSS constellation of satellites providing navigational services to the region. Designed for a 10-year lifetime, the IRNSS 1C satellite joins two navigation satellites launched in July 2013 and in April. The satellite is placed in geostationary orbit at 83 degrees East longitude.
• IRNSS consists of a constellation of seven satellites and a large ground segment. Three of the seven satellites in IRNSS constellation are in GEO (Geostationary Orbit) at 32.5°, 83° and 131.5° East, while the other four satellites are in an inclined geosynchronous orbit with an inclination of 29° with longitude crossing at 55° and 111.75° East. All the seven satellites have continuous radio visibility with Indian control stations.
• IRNSS-1C satellite will have two payloads: a navigation payload and CDMA ranging payload in addition with a laser retro-reflector. The payload generates navigation signals at L5 and S-band. The design of the payload makes the IRNSS system inter-operable and compatible with Global Positioning System (GPS) and Galileo. The satellite is powered by two solar arrays, which generate power up to 1,660 watts, and has a life-time of ten years.

Mission details:

• India's PSLV-XL rocket launched the country's third dedicated navigation satellite on Oct 16. The 1425 kg IRNSS-1C was launched to a sub synchronous transfer orbit of 271 x 20600 km x 17.9 deg.
