Description:

• ASIASAT 8 is a telecommunications designed to beam television and data across China, India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The satellite 8 will be parked along the equator at 105.5 degrees east longitude, where it will hover 22,300 miles (35,888 km) over Asia, broadcasting direct-to-home television signals to China, India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The satellite's 24 Ku-band transponders - routing signals through four communications beams - will also support data broadcasting and other telecom services. AsiaSat 8 also carries a Ka-band communications payload. The spacecraft will be the most powerful member of AsiaSat's fleet. It will be co-located with the AsiaSat 7 satellite launched in 2011, at the orbital location of 100.5° East. AsiaSat 8 is designed to operate for 15 years.
• Equipped with 210 W Ku-band TWTAs, AsiaSat 8 will offer the highest downlink power in the region. With a payload power of 8,500 W, AsiaSat 8 is the most powerful member of AsiaSat’s fleet.

Mission details:

• SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 on Aug 5, 2014 carrying the Asiasat 8 satellite for Asiasat of Hong Kong. The Loral LS-1300LL satellite has a 4535 kg mass at separation and uses an R-4D bipropellant thruster to reach GEO. The first R-4D burn on Aug 6 raised the orbit from 180 x 35762 km x 24.3 deg to 7137 x 35751 km x 10.7 deg. By Aug 11 the satellite was in a 35725 x 35732 km x 0.1 deg orbit drifting east over 104E.
