2002-035 - Ariane 5G

The main cryogenic stage for Flight 153 is raised above the Ariane 5 mobile launch table inside the launcher integration building. Once it is suspended over the table, the Ariane 5's two solid booster stages will be moved into position on each side for mating to the stage. Flight 153 will be Arianespace's second Ariane 5 mission in 2002.

One of two large solid booster stages for Flight 153 is moved along the rail system leading to the Ariane 5 integration building. The solid booster rides on a pallet that will slide onto the mobile launch table and positioned next to the cryogenic core stage for mating.

The Ariane 5 launcher for Flight 153 rolls out of the Spaceport’s launcher integration building on June 18 for its transfer to the final assembly building. Assembly of the Ariane 5 began on May 21 in the integration building, where the cryogenic core stage, two solid booster stages, EPS storable propellant upper stage and vehicle equipment bay were integrated.

Flight 153’s nearly complete launcher moves along the dual rail line that connects the Ariane 5 vehicle integration building with the final assembly facility. With the Ariane 5 now in the final assembly facility, the dual satellite payload of N-STAR c and Stellat 5 can be integrated atop the launcher.

Pulled by a special multi-purpose tug from Germany’s MAN, the launcher for Flight 153 makes its way to the launch zone.The Ariane 5 carries two payloads: Stellat 5, built by Europe’s Alcatel Space for the Stellat joint venture company (France Telecom and Europe*Star); and N-STAR c, produced by Lockheed Martin and Orbital for Japanese telecom operator NTT DoCoMo.
